Formatting Word for Reports Online

Reports

This session will help you to format your Word document for a Report submission. Your coursework brief will outline the layout and format of your Report submissions.

Numbered headings and page numbers are required for all reports. You can see below a list of sections included in a standard report structure. These can differ slightly from assignment to assignment, so make sure to check your assignment coursework brief for specifics.

  • Title page
  • Table of Contents page
  • Introduction
  • The main body of text (with sections/chapters to suit your material)
  • Conclusion
  • Bibliography
  • Appendix

This session will cover:

  • Using Styles to create numbered headings
  • Using Styles to format text (heading styles, paragraphs)
  • Use Section Breaks for correct page numbering
  • How and when to use Page Breaks in the main body of text
  • Add numbered captions to Tables and Figures
  • How to refer to Tables and Figures in-text with Word's automated cross-reference function.
  • Generate an automatic Table of Content
  • Generate an automatic Table of Figures and a List of Tables.
This workshop is suitable for undergraduates and postgraduate students. Note: PhD students are recommended to check the Graduate Schools guidance on Blackboard, as this workshop will not cover how to create chapters in Word.
