The Intersectionality matrix, a simple pedagogic tool to explore representation and fire up discussion Online

In this Kimberlin session Dr Kelly Stockdale, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, Northumbria University and Rowan Sweeney, Researcher at York St John University will introduce their intersectionality matrix and talk about its various applications as a means of developing critical understanding of whose voices are included, excluded, and marginalized within a discipline. The tool provides a visual way to exploring representation of ethnicity, gender, and social economic class focusing on specific reading lists or student research and reading. The tool can be used to kick start discussion about how information and knowledge are formed and the unequal power relations at the heart of this process. It encourages us to ask questions about the predominant voices within a discipline, or to highlight student assumptions about key researchers and theorists. A useful tool for decolonising the curriculum.
